A domain is both the address where users can find your website and your brand on the internet. Technically, a domain works through the DNS (Domain Name System), which translates a human-readable name (such as "yourcompany.com") into the numeric IP address of the server hosting your site. Without DNS, users would need to memorize strings of numbers to access any webpage.
Beyond the website itself, a domain lets you create professional email addresses using your own name (for example, contact@yourcompany.com), which conveys far greater credibility and trust to customers. It is also a fundamental brand asset: it shapes how people find you on Google, how they remember you, and how they perceive you in the market. Registering your own domain is the essential first step toward building any serious digital presence.
Registering a domain is extremely straightforward. Once you complete payment, our system processes orders automatically. For .com domains and other international extensions (.net, .org, .tv…), your domain is approved in seconds and you can manage it immediately through your control panel. For some country-code domains (such as .com.ar, .com.pa, .com.ve, etc.), the request is reviewed by the relevant authority and it may take a few days for your registration to be approved. In all cases, we will notify you as soon as registration is complete.
If you want to connect your domain to a hosting service or website, keep in mind that the domain may take a few hours to become fully active. This is because domain information needs to propagate across the internet's main server network, a process that can take up to 48 hours (though in practice it usually completes much sooner).
At Registros.com, in addition to .com domains, we offer registration services for most web domain extensions: .net, .org, .online, .io, .tv, and more. We also specialize in Latin American domains: .ar, .cl, .co, .mx, .bo, .pe, .ec, and many others. If you have an online presence across multiple countries and need a company that can help you manage all your domains in one place, Registros.com is the right choice.
Our domain list shows all the extensions you can register directly through our domain search. If you are interested in an extension not on the list, contact us — we can very likely help.
Have you just searched for your brand name only to find that the corresponding domain has already been registered by someone else? In that case, there are two options:
Whenever possible, we recommend registering the .com domain alongside the domain for your country (.com.ar, .cl, .pe, .com.mx, etc.).
.com domains are recognized and used worldwide, allowing you to reach users across multiple countries with a single domain. When the .com is unavailable, or when the content or activity promoted through a website is closely tied to one or more specific countries, a country-code domain (e.g. .com.ar or .cl) is just as strong an option as .com.
For multinational projects and businesses, registering all relevant domain variants is recommended. This prevents third parties from registering your brand and using it in ways that could conflict with your interests.
When we talk about getting a domain, we commonly say we are going to "buy a domain." However, domains cannot actually be purchased in the traditional sense — you cannot pay once and own the domain forever. That is why the domain industry uses the term "registering a domain." Registering a domain is essentially obtaining an exclusive license to use it for a set period. This license is limited to the term for which you contracted the domain and can be renewed as many times as you wish, allowing you to maintain ownership for as long as you like. At the same time, if someone loses interest in a domain, this system allows it to become available for someone else to register.
From a user's perspective, "buying a domain" and "registering a domain" typically refer to the same thing: contracting the use of a domain name.
Strictly speaking, however, it is not possible to "buy a domain" in the same way you can buy a house, a computer, or any other asset. When you buy something, you acquire ownership of it permanently. That is why the domain industry prefers the term "registering a domain" — the logic being similar to registering a trademark.
Just like a trademark, when you register a domain you obtain the rights to use it for a specific period. Unlike trademarks, however, domains can always be renewed up to a maximum number of years that varies by domain type (for .com domains, the maximum registration period is 10 years).
Domain professionals also distinguish between registering a domain and buying a domain. In that context, "buying a domain" refers to acquiring the rights to a domain that has already been registered by someone else — an agreement between buyer and seller on the transfer of those rights in exchange for an agreed price.
In the first case, the price is a registration fee. In the second, it requires reaching a purchase agreement with the current owner first.
A good web domain has three characteristics: it is unique, easily recognizable, and simple to remember. To achieve the last point, make sure your domain is easy to pronounce and easy to spell — both qualities make it far easier for internet users to memorize your domain. If you have also chosen a .com domain, you are on the right track, as .com domains are the most recognized and widely used.
A few practical tips to help you choose well: keep the name under 15 characters, since shorter domains are typed with fewer errors and recalled more easily. Avoid hyphens and numbers, as they cause confusion when dictating the domain out loud. Before registering, also check whether the name is available as a username on major social networks (Instagram, X, LinkedIn) so you can maintain a consistent brand identity across all digital channels. Finally, verify that the name does not conflict with existing registered trademarks to avoid legal issues down the road.
